The Shoe-collector’s closet - Indian Dandy meets Edward Lalrempuia and his larger than life shoe closet
The fashion director of Harper’s Bazaar India, Edward Lalrempuia is a familiar name in the fashion circles. Kick-starting his career as a stylist with Elle India, Edward takes us through his journey in the Fashion fraternity and his one true love through all these years- Shoes.
From styling covers to cover girls, covering miles between cities and continents and working with the crème de la crème of the tinsel town, Edward likes to come back to Delhi, the place he calls home. This is where we meet to talk about his passion and collection of shoes.
In his own words, Edward is a serious substance abuser, the ‘substance’ of his choice being shoes. “Shoes make a man! I was always very particular about my shoes. Even as a kid, I had the shiniest pair in school!”, he exclaims. It beguiled and excited me to know that it all began in 2011 and he has been collecting at least a pair a month since 2013.From classic Tod’s Moccasins to the crystallised Louboutins and metallic Zanotti’s, his collection has a little something from my street to high street. His shoe wardrobe is as eclectic as the celebrities he styles.
I ask him if he has a favourite and he says, “In the last few years my wardrobe has become all black and now I would like to quirk it up a bit.”
We talk and he shares so many insights with me about keeping my shoes young and sturdy and then comes the moment that I have been eagerly waiting for. The sweet revelation of his shoes closet. Believe me, it is not for the faint hearted. Edward’s shoe closet is a surreal vision with rows upon rows of shoes. All expensive, beautiful and shiny pairs from season’s must-haves to timeless classics.
It's difficult to tear myself away from this beautiful sight. “Doing what I do it is easier to get great discounts at most of the brands and I keep an eye on the unbelievable online sales!”, he says promptly seeing the dollar sign flashing in my eyes!
Our soiree comes to an end and we close the interview with a few shoe secrets from the man himself.
