Ranveer singh has been on a roll! Not just his movies have been major hits but also his style is much talked about. Love it or loathe it but you can’t ignore it!
Mens fashion in India has always been on the sidelines, almost like a footnote. Ranveer Singh has managed to make people get up and take notice and the one person who has been the most instrumental in this phenomenon (at least i think it is one) is Nitasha Gaurav.
Not a new name in the world of fashion / styling, Nitasha’s roster of celebrity clients is very impressive. Prior to shifting focus on Ranveer Singh, Nitasha did some impressive work with Parineeti Chopra and was also the Fashion editor of the oldest Indian womens fashion magazine Femina.
Between fittings for award shows and styling editorials i managed to ask her these quick questions which have been on my mind for a while:
1 - As a stylist to some of the leading actors, most notably Ranveer Singh, what are the changes you are finding in how they want to be styled?
The biggest difference is the desire to look distinct and stand out in a crowd. No longer do men want to dress conservatively. They are loving colours, detailing and styling as much as their female counterparts. The attention they get on red carpets now is much as the women get. It's no longer about conforming or being safe.
2 - Is there a brief / thought you follow while styling Ranveer?
His personality is pretty much my guiding light and brief. He is extremely handsome, intelligent, aware, vivacious and pretty much entirely fearless when it comes to fashion.
3 - What are the challenges you face in styling these actors in clothes by Indian designers vis-a-vis international brands?
I love Indian designers. They have an inherent upper hand in understanding colours and silhouettes that work on the Indian body. They are able to celebrate Indian traditional textiles and crafts in a way that makes their clothes unique. With Indian designers, a black suit is far more than a black suit.
4 - What is the one thing that most actors always insist upon (in terms of styling)?
A good fit is very important.
5 - Whats your advice to guys who would like to emulate Ranveer Singh’s style of dressing?
Emulate his style in that he wears what he likes and wants to. He doesn't copy anyone nor does he follow trends blindly. Be like that - follow your own heart.
6 - Yesteryear’s actors you wish you could style and why?
Any of the James Bond actors
7 - Your favourite Indian mens designers?
Rohit Bal, Sabyasachi, Rahul Khanna Rohit Gandhi, Anju Modi, Arjun Saluja, Sahil Aneja, Anuj Madan, Troy Costa, Ashish N Soni, Raghuvendra Rathore.
